Karl and his wife, Kris, called Ann Arbor home for over two decades while raising their family. Their journey has taken them to cities on three continents, where they've shared passions for cycling, sailing, swimming, tennis, travel, and the arts.

Karl brings extensive coaching experience to LCSC, having worked with Michigan Lakeshore Aquatics, Club Wolverine, Saline Swim Team, and Saline Middle School. From beginners to collegiate-level athletes, he has consistently guided swimmers to achieve at the highest levels.

As Lead Coach of Club Wolverine’s Intermediate Maize and White Groups (2018–2022), Karl helped CW secure nine consecutive 11–12 State Championships. His athletes set three state records, achieved four USA #1 rankings, and earned multiple state and zone titles—successes that contributed to his recognition as one of USA Swimming’s Top 50 Age Group Coaches in 2021.

At Saline Swim Team (2014–2018), Karl led the Middle School program to a 26–1 dual meet record and over 20 MISCA State Championships. Many of those swimmers continue to thrive in NCAA Division I, II, and III programs across the country.

Since joining LCSC, Karl’s impact has been quickly felt. Within one year, the team rose to #3 in Michigan among senior women and #7 overall among senior teams. Two athletes earned IMX #1 state rankings and placed in the top-20 nationally, while many others qualified for Zones, Sectionals, and Futures—bringing home multiple podium finishes. Most notably, two swimmers achieved Junior National standards and became eligible for Scholastic All-American recognition. These milestones reflect both the dedication of LCSC athletes and the culture of excellence being built at the club.

Karl believes the greatest reward in coaching is teaching a swimmer’s intellect and inspiring young athletes to exceed their own expectations. His philosophy echoes Rafael Nadal: “The glory is being happy. The glory is enjoying practicing. Enjoying every day. Enjoying working hard. Trying to be a better player than before.”

Coach Kim brings a vast knowledge of technique and skills to our team! He excels at setting the foundations and necessary skills for our younger and beginner swimmers. His coaching approach is very hands on and descriptive, perfect for helping our younger swimmers learn and develop in competitive swimming. He brings his teachings to our older, more developed swimmers as well, reminding them why our foundations and basics are so important! Sangsu is a huge asset to our team.

Outside of the pool, Sangsu enjoys traveling with his wife and daughter.

Savanna brings an impressive range of experience to the program. She served as an Assistant Coach with Liquid Lightning / Royal Swimming starting in 2024, where she worked with swimmers ranging from novice through senior levels while assisting with training plans and club operations. Her coaching approach emphasizes strong technical foundations, steady development, and clear communication with swimmers and families.

Before moving into coaching, Savanna competed at a very high level. She swam collegiately at Eastern Michigan University, where she was recruited by legendary coach Peter Linn, and later completed her career at Wayne State University. During her collegiate career she earned multiple victories and top-five finishes, including a 5th-place finish in the 1650 freestyle at the Mid-American Conference Championships. Earlier in her career in Kanata, Ontario, Savanna qualified for Canadian Olympic Trials twice and was a five-time Canadian Senior National qualifier, giving her firsthand experience with the preparation required for high-level competition.

Savanna is married to her husband, Noah Carden and together they have a baby boy, also named Noah. As a family, they enjoy travelling, watching baseball and spending time outside with family and friends.
